Adventure 1: Costa Rica

Thoughts and Lessons From My First Costa Rica Experience

1.) It's okay to be excited about traveling, but don't over-excite yourself to the point where you make yourself sick!!

This first trip to Costa Rica meant a LOT of first time experiences for my 15-year old self. My first time flying, my first time in a foreign country, and my first opportunity to test out my Spanish skills!! (Which at that point were rather non-existent.) I remember we left our house to meet at the church at 2:00am. While my dad was busy sleeping (smart man) my constant stream of adrenaline kept me wide awake, making any kind of sleeping or napping impossible. I ended up sick on our second flight, and it wasn't because of motion sickness. Yes, I made myself sick with excitement!

This one speaks for itself :)

2.) Costa Rica is not a bright, hot, sunny place 365 days a year. There is a wet season and a dry season. We were there during the wet season. It rains almost every day around the same time every day, like clockwork.

I really had no clue where Costa Rica was even located on a map when I decided to go on this trip. For those who don't know, it's a small country in Latin America (the region between Mexico and South America) between Panama and Nicaragua, a heck of a lot closer to the equator than Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Costa Rica literally means "Rich Coast", so I thought Costa Rica's main geographical draw were its beaches. WRONG. Although this country is known for its beaches and surf competitions, and our team didn't spend any time near the coast, it also has a lush abundance of rain forests and mountains. (Hence the rain and humidity!) It truly is a beautiful place. I haven't experienced the dry season there yet, but I can guess that it probably gets pretty hot!

Landing in San Jose, Costa Rica. Rain. (SHH! Don't tell the flight attendant!!)

San Jose, Costa Rica. About to rain.

En route to San Carlos, Costa Rica. Misty rain.

San Carlos, Costa Rica. RAIN!! :)

***More thoughts to come in the near future!!
